LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Well isn't that just the WORST. Photo courtesy dugm2 via Flickr.

Quiet week on the comedy front, with a few notable exceptions like Cagematch, Dragon Boy Suede, and Barats & Bereta. Get AT ME if you wanna.

MONDAY 8/31

Ultimate X-Ecution, 8p iO West. This long-running competition is winding down. See who’s left and cast your vote for a winner.

Faculty Show, 10p Westside Comedy. Come watch all the WC teachers get up and put their funny where their mouth is for a change. Followed by a jam.

TUESDAY 9/1

Tuesday Night Thunder, 8p Sierra Stage. The guys who run this free (but donation-heavy) show are true comedy fans who just want to promote improv in LA. Kickass.

Valley Nights, 10p Hollywood Improv. Stand up featuring Dragon Boy Suede and Steve Byrne.

WEDNESDAY 9/2

Playboy Comedy, 8p Irvine Improv. Stand up and Playboy bunnies. What else is there?

UCB Cagematch, 11p UCB. Benderdangle is 6-0, but now they go up against the formidable house team The Smokes. Should be awesome.

THURSDAY 9/3

Anjelah Johnson, 8:30p Jon Lovitz Comedy Club. Former Mad TV performer and Raiderette, Johnson has started doing stand up regularly. Interesting.

Good Neighbor / Barats & Bereta, 8p UCB. Two great online sketch groups take their shit to the stage, and everyone wins. This shit should be at least as good as A Kiss From Daddy / Birthday Boys.

FRIDAY 9/4

Friday Write Club, 8p iO West. The monthly iO sketch show.

Viva Luis, 10:30p National Comedy Theater. A benefit show for Luis Cortes, with guests featuring Tom Clark, Ninja Vanish, and the Wunna Weeks crew.

SATURDAY 9/5

Alex Reywundo, 8p Ice House. You’ll know him from the Original Latin Kings of Comedy, if you’ve every seen it. If not, I can’t help you.

Lounge Act, 11:30p Hollywood Improv. A laid back stand up show for anyone not looking to heckle or have a prop comic throw something at them.

SUNDAY 9/6

Josh Blue, 7p Irvine Improv. You probably remember his as the Last Comic Standing winner with Cerebral Palsy.

MMA Celeb Roast, 9p Jon Lovitz Comedy Club. No word on who, if anyone, from the MMA world will actually be there. Also, how scary to roast a professional fighter to their face?

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
