LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Well, comedy never sleeps so why should you? After last week's stand up show at Hollywood Forever, brace yourselves for another rousing week of rambunctious laughter at the ends of some of LAs best and brightest. There's Mark Curry, Patton Oswalt, Tig Notaro. There's cagematches and sketch shows and everything under the sun, particularly at Largo and the Improv. You know the drill: hit me up if you want your show listed.

MONDAY 8/24

Support for LAist comes from

Mary Lynn Rajskub / Tig Notaro, 9p Largo Little Room. These wonderful girls are back and (hopefully) as funny as ever. They are doing some of the best female alternative comedy in the city.

Cagematch: Omega, 11p iO West. There’s a new improv cagematch in town, and it’s at iO West. Branching off of their popular cagematch on Thursdays, it’s a whole other round of comedy competition.

TUESDAY 8/25

Mixed Doubles Quartet, 8p iO West. Mixed Doubles means two girls and two guys doing 4-person improv against a team of similar make up for outright comedy-and-sexual-tension supremacy.

Fred Armisen & Guests, 9p Largo. This great comedy show features a lot of funny guests, which seems to be the MO of Largo these days.

WEDNESDAY 8/26

Light Speed, 6:30p UCB. This Spank show offers a unique twist in that it’s a play, and not another one-man “why doesn’t the opposite sex like me” piece. Definitely worth checking out.

Laughing with Tom Arnold, 8p Laugh Factory. Since the Laugh Factory site officially turned to crap (the videos are fine, but just PLEASE make it easy on anyone who wants to know WHO is actually going to be performing), the Tom Arnold free for the unemployed show is the only reason to go. Or at least that you know of, since the site don’t tell you shit.

THURSDAY 8/27

A Cause for Comedy, 8p Hollywood Improv. The charity show is back, raising money for Causecast. Good vibes and good stand up make for a great night.

Daryl Wright, 10:30p Jon Lovitz Comedy Club. DC native Daryl Wright takes his stand up show to the JLCC.

FRIDAY 8/28

All About Walken, 8p Hollywood Improv. Walken impersonators talk..well, all things Walken, really. Awesome show.

Mark Curry, 10:30p Ice House. Don’t stay COOPED up on Friday, head out to the ‘Dena for some HANGIN’ with longtime comedian Mark Curry.

SATURDAY 8/29

Patton Oswalt, 9p Largo. PATTON! Just go, you won’t be disappointed. The man’s got a new CD out, after all.

Maz Jobrani, 9:15p Comedy & Magic Club. Maz is a familiar face and has been part of the Axis of Evil comedy for a while now. Check him out.

SUNDAY 8/30

Jeff Garcia, 7p Irvine Improv. Longtime stand up Garcia is in the OC basically all week. Give yourself a Sunday treat.

ASSSSCAT, 7:30p UCB. The free version of the amazing Saturday show, come out and see what real improv in Los Angeles is all about.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
