LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy
Money in the mail. Photo via kpe2 via LAist Flickr page.
There's a lot of good stuff around town, as the comedy world gears up for next week's LA Improv Festival at iO West. Garfunkel and Oates are at UCB, Jo Koy is out and about, and Dave Attell is headlining with some hardcore hilarious folks. Not to mention Patton and his friends, and Maria Bamford at The Improv. It's stand up time!
MONDAY 5/25
The Smokes BBQ Blowout, 7p UCB. Join veteran improvisors The Smokes at UCB as they bring you a backyard BBQ monoscene. Should be amazing.
Three on One, 11:30p iO West. Technically it’s four females improvising, but the joke is that three are lesbians and one is straight. Awkward kissing scenes? Who knows. Just good comedy, at least.
TUESDAY 5/26
USS Rock N Roll vs Local 132, 9p iO West. Holy F you guys, the iO West Harold Tourney is almost done, with USS and Local competing for a chance to make the finals. This may be the best matchup in the whole tourney. GO!
Operation Smile Laughathon, 8p Laugh Factory. Go check out this show to raise money for UCLA-based Operation Smile. A great time for an even better cause.
WEDNESDAY 5/27
Garfunkel & Oates, 8p UCB. The lovely ladies are back at UCB for another half hour comedy hour, featuring the ukulele, the cuteness, and the funny.
Collegehumor.com ComedyJuice, 10p The Improv. Ben Gleib joins this awesome show, featuring Dax Shepard, Dan Levy, and even Dave Attell.
THURSDAY 5/28
Nick Kroll, 9:30p UCB. Fabrice Fabrice, El Chupacabra, and the rest of Nick Kroll’s amazing characters come together for a show that will blow your mind.
Jo Koy, 8p Comedy & Magic Club. The recently reviewed Koy takes his latest show on the road and makes a stop at the beach.
FRIDAY 5/29
Letters to Kobe, 8p iO West. Any true Fakers (ahem...Lakers) fan needs to see this show, as it combines photos and video and real fan letters to Kobe into one hilarious package.
Maria Bamford, 8p The Improv. This lovely lady’s got a new CD out, titled Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome, and she is a guarantee in a stand up world where most comics are anything but.
SATURDAY 5/30
Peter Berman, 9p Downtown Comedy Club. If you’re downtown and want to check out the reopened club, Berman is probably your safest bet there for a while.
Patton & Friends, 9p Largo. Oswalt, Greg Behrendt, and Guys With Feelings’ Jason Nash take the stage, along with some other comics for a packed night.
SUNDAY 5/31
Hypnotist Mark Sweet, 7p Ice House. Funny hypnotism, if that’s your thing.
Enter the Sunday, 7:30p The Groundlings. Sketches and improv from the mainstage company.
As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
