LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Wowzers. Patton n' friends at Hollywood Forever, Beer Shark Mice at iO West, a Neil Simon play, Zach Galifianakis, and (gulp) Dane Cook. What a week ahead! Email Farley if you're interested in getting love here for an upcoming show of yours.

MONDAY 3/9

Support for LAist comes from

The Matts, 6-8p LittleRadio.com. If you’re around a computer, check out littleradio.com for the new The Matts show, which is Matt Dwyer and Matt Braunger talking to their comic pals. In their inaugural session they bring in the seminal Steve Agee off the Sarah Silverman Show. They’ll probs talk about how Sarah and Kimmel broke up again. Frown.

Musical Improv, 9p Second City. Watch the students take on musical improv as they try to tackle a full musical.

TUESDAY 3/10

Ben Gleib, 10p Irvine Improv. Head down south to see the great Ben Gleib do some
stand up alongside Owen Benjamin and Eric Schwartz.

CDR Sketch, 11p UCB. Stick around after Comedy Death Ray for some awesome sketch. This week see the insurmountable Birthday Boys, Ben Schwartz, and Jon Daly. Not to be missed.

Dane Cook, 10p Laugh Factory. What a tough call... You can stay outside so your car won’t get stolen, or go inside and know that all your jokes will. SNAPPP.

WEDNESDAY 3/11

Zach Galifianakis, 9p Largo at Coronet. Please check out the Pantless show by Zach G. It will change your life.

Hot Butter, 10:30p Westside Eclectic. Feel like getting back to your roots with some short form improv? Think Whose Line is it Anyway? If you’re still interested, maybe check it out. The Greg Wilson is involved, so it’s worth a look.

THURSDAY 3/12

Comedy is Dead 5, 8p Hollywood Forever. Possibly the greatest occasional stand up show in town, which in and of itself doesn’t sound like a big deal. But this show is absolutely amazing, and should be seen at all costs. Actually the cost is only $10, which is even better.

Maude Night, 8p UCB. The best writers and performers from UCB step up to the plate with their latest and greatest staged pieces. A great opportunity to see what’s next (and what’s already here) for UCB.

FRIDAY 3/13

California Suite, 8p STAGEStheatre. Head down to Fullerton to check out the latest Neil Simon play about four different groups heading to the same California hotel. Should be awesome.

Frazier Smith, 10p Laugh Factory. The All-Star comedy night kicks off with a series of comics including the funny Frazer Smith.

SATURDAY 3/14

The Todd Wilson Experiment, 10p Ultimate Improv. Jacob Reed (Fiasco! and Roberto Alomar) and Gian Molina (Sunday Sunday Sunday) help Todd Wilson figure some seriously funny shit out on stage.

Beer Shark Mice, 9p iO West. This gigantasaurus of a group isn’t around too much any more, so catch their stuff while you can. This is the only confirmed show for the month of March for one of the true heavy hitters of improv.

SUNDAY 3/15

Finish Henderson, 7:30p Comedy & Magic Club. This guy does a grip of funny musical impressions. Bring your over-40 ass down to the beach for some cocktails and giggles.

Tang, 11:30p iO West. All girl sketch comedy is pretty much all you need to hear. And with the cute-as-heck Kim Mulligan, Amy Vorphal, Lilian Bowden and Barbara King it should be a night of smiles and giggles the likes of which you haven’t seen since you read ghost stories under your blankets at night with your girlfriends. Tee hee.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
