LAist Film Calendar 02/09-02/12: Oscars Love Shorts, Cinefamily Loves Valentines
This Valentine's weekend, remember it isn't the size of the short that counts, but how it puts its frames to use. The Oscar-nominated Live Action & Animated Shorts opens at the Nuart this weekend. The Live Action line-up includes Irish football comedy Pentecost, German-Indian missing child movie Raju, Northern Irish slice-of-life The Shore, neurotic time travel comedy Time Freak and Scandinavian surrealist satire Tuba Atlantic. The Animated program consists of Dimanche/Sunday, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, Pixar's La Luna, A Morning Stroll and Wild Life. If you're saving up for a dozen red roses, UCLA's Melnitz Movies series screens the Oscar-nominated Live Action & Animated Shorts for free Thursday. Linda O. Olszewski, Vice-President of Global Acquisitions for Shorts International (distributor of the shorts) will introduce, and the event will be the second under Melnitz' new numbered, laminated ticket system.
Combine the love of shorts with Black History Month at the Egyptian's Spielberg Theatre Saturday for the 5th annual African American ShortsFest. The two programs cross a variety of styles & genres, from live action drama to web comedy, animated action, documentary & even experimental. Highlights include Paul Mooney's This Weekend Update, LA's historic club Jamaica House, Ghanian rapper M3NSA & Facebook drama. A bad Black History Month can oversimplify the African American experience to slavery, civil rights & peanut butter (or to put it cinematically, blackface, Sidney Poitier & Tyler Perry), but a program like this shows how diverse African American culture was & continues to be.
If you're looking for love in feature-length places this weekend, look no further than the Cinefamily's Seven Days of Valentines. The series spans all eras, beginning tonight with Wholphin Love, celebrating the video magazine's forthcoming Valentine issue. Tomorrow, resident animation historian Jerry Beck curates tales of toon lovers. Friday, it's the only-in-LA independent Minnie and Moskowitz, featuring a Q&A with star Seymour Cassel (whose hundreds of roles includes Max Fischer's dad in Rushmore). Saturday gets grungy with 90s time capsule Singles, accompanied by what the 'Fam calls "an authentic ‘90s coffee shop experience [with] video dating booth, photo booth by Snap Yourself!, craft table by Paw Paw-Club, and more!!" Sunday, swank it up with truly classic couple Nick & Nora Charles in the screwball mystery The Thin Man (with plenty of cocktails in tow). It all comes back to the beginning with a Valentine's Day screening of the Academy's very first Best Picture, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. Then it truly climaxes with one of the Cinefamily's trademark movie mixtapes, The 100 Most Outrageous Fucks.
