Classical Pick of the Week: ¡Bienvenido Gustavo!

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

This Saturday. October 3rd. 4 PM. Gustavo Dudamel. Hollywood Bowl. What more needs to be said? If you weren't able to get tickets to this event (sold out in an hour), there will be a live HD webcast of the concert, available on the LA Phil website, the first of its kind. After 10 AM the following Sunday, the webcast will be available for 24 hours. If you don't feel like watching the entire 4 hours and 30 minute segment, you can select each individual performance to view at this time. But with "warm-up" acts like Flea, Herbie Hancock, Alfredo Rodriguez, and Andrae Crouch (among others), who would want to? Dudamel will conclude the evening with a performance of Beethoven's 9th. With fireworks! The webcast will give you the best views and you don't have to deal with parking!

For those that are going to the concert, here are a few reminders. You can bring alcohol!!!!! That nice bottle of wine you've been saving looks good right about now. The marketplace at the Hollywood Bowl is a little pricey, and if you don't have the time to buy food beforehand, try to at least bring a couple of bottles with you. Carpool. Carpool. Carpool. Arrive at least two hours early, or park at the Hollywood and Highland complex. You can get picnic boxes from Joans, M Cafe, Street, Tavern, and pizza from Mozza2Go (I'm getting a few paninis myself). This concert is supposed to go from 4 to 8:30, so bring something warm just in case. If you're taking pictures, turn off the flash. It's irritating and ineffective unless you're 12 feet away from him. Parking is 10-20 dollars cash (depending on the lot), so bring some cash. Use the restroom before the concert. And change your phone to vibrate or silent now so you don't forget next week. Enjoy!

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
