Eco-friendly books and guides to living a sustainable life are published at a breakneck pace these days. From what you should be eating, to what you should be wearing, to what you should be composting, there is a green guru that can guide you. Several of these green gurus live in Los Angeles and their new books are on our radar to check out this summer:

The Urban Homestead: Your Guide to Self-sufficient Living in the Heart of the City by Kelly Coyne & Erik Knutzen - Kelly & Erik live in a small L.A. bungalow and are well-known for their Homegrown Evolution blog that offers a daily glimpse into their lives as urban gardeners. They've culled together their top tips for growing gardens in small spaces (think balcony or teeny tiny window ledge) and establishing your own urban homestead, whether you've got a huge backyward or a shared fire escape. Far from hippy-dippy, Kelly & Erik are modern role models for today's growing concerns about where our food comes from and how to live accordingly.

Vintage L.A.: Eats, Boutiques, Decor, Landmarks, Markets & More by Jennifer Brandt Taylor - While not overtly green on the surface, even the most hard core green guru will tell you that pre-loved, lived-in vintage wares are the best way to give new life to old things in an effort to reduce our reliance on new products that are made with not-so-earth-friendly processes. Taylor knows her stuff and not only shares L.A.'s secret (and not so secret) spots, but offers her insider take on our favorite landmarks and eateries.

Gorgeously Green: 8 Simple Steps to an Earth-Friendly Life by Sophie Uliano - Hollywood resident Sophie Uliano has created an online destination for stylish women everywhere through her Gorgeously Green site that tackles all things green from green beauty and fashion tips to eco-friendly home care to sustainable travel choices. While Uliano's book focuses heavily on green-moms, it also promises insights and practical knowledge for women of all ages, in all stages of their lives.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
