Bike MS in SM = Beer + Bikes for a Cause

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

As the summer winds down, it’s important to remember that there’s still a lot of good reasons -and even better causes - to get outside. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to kick back and just enjoy a beer either, does it? Well, if you’d like to give back, get out, and grab a drink while you’re at it, then consider Tuesday’s Bike MS at the Library Ale House on Main Street in Santa Monica.

Not only is the National Multiple Sclerosis Society doing really great work in educating and assisting those among us who have become afflicted with such a heartbreaking autoimmune disease, it is also the largest supplier of funding for advanced MS research in the entire world. As a non-profit, the MS Society routinely holds fundraisers like Bike MS in order to raise money and intelligence on an issue that, frankly, not a lot of people want to think about. But enough about why giving back is important, let’s drink some beer in the sun!

As long as you already had plans to pour a few pints on Tuesday, you might as well do it at the Library Ale House, where 15% of the proceeds will go to the greater cause. In addition, there will be a ride with Phil Keoghan of The Amazing Race and a bike valet, so all you whiney hipsters can’t complain that no one’s thinking about your two-wheeled love affairs. In fact, there’s going to be a raffle for $5 / ticket to win your own beach cruiser, or a $10 ticket for a chance at the raffle and a beer sampling! Oh, and this whole shindig is sponsored by New Belgium Beer (they of the bike-on-the-label fame), so expect $4 Fat Tires all night.

Seriously, though, the MS Society is doing really great work, and they couldn’t make it any easier to get out, have some drinks, and give some money to a worthy cause. See you there, bike babies!

The hour-long training ride with Phil Keoghan starts at 5:30 at the Library Ale House and basically does one big loop. The beer sampling runs from 5:30 - 7:00, but the Fat Tire flows all day and night.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
