"2011: The Adult Industry in Photos" is a candid look back at the past twelve months at a business that is headquartered in the San Fernando Valley. Continued from Tuesday and Wednesday.
With thousands of adult movies released annually, it's easy for notable titles to be lost in the deluge, so here are our recommendations, starting with our favorite for last year:
Popporn's Man vs. Pussy (Goodnight Media), which is not a parody of Man vs. Wild with Bear Grylls. We've been longtime fans of Lee Roy Myers and Popporn's Spock Buckton and Brian Bangs, so when we heard they'd be collaborating for this project, we knew we'd be privy to something magical. As the only media outlet who were dedicated (or insane) enough to be on-set for the entire shoot back in April, we can attest that the feeling was special from the moment we stepped foot in the studio. The simple premise is, "Can male performer Anthony Rosano complete five separate sex scenes with five different pornstars in 12 hours?" Adding potential male performer substitute Marco Banderas (who's standing by with his own Canal+ television crew no less), and documenting everything including what transpired behind-the-scenes, gave what seemed like a throwaway idea an unscripted hilarity and unexpected reality, not to mention the occasional gravitas. This movie is so great, we've become its unofficial evangelists and handed it to several friends in Hollywood, raving that this is the kind of cutting-edge, genre-transcending product that's being produced in Porn Valley (and we mean that in a positive way). It's admittedly funny (and perhaps even ridiculous) to rave about porn, but Man vs. Pussy is brilliantly-conceived and executed on every level. It's not "just porn," it's "must-see porn."
But we're not alone in our praise. "This film is brilliant - creative, hilarious, humanizing, and even hott [sic]... It is easily one of the most incredible pieces of filmic art I have ever seen," gushed Chauntelle Anne Tibbals, PhD at Porn Valley Vantage. She concludes, "If you are looking for sex, it's here; if you are looking for a behind-the-scenes porn production peek, it's here; if you are looking for humanity and/or if you have ever wanted an idea of what a man porn performer must go through on a set, it's here. This is anthropology and sociology all at once. And it's also porn, and it's also funny. Man Vs. Pussy is amazing."
"Man Vs. Pussy... was one of our favorite titles of the year, combining lots of humor, hot sex, and all sorts of entertaining exchanges between the cast & crew to make it stand out from the pack," raved XCritic. They add, "We'll be the first to admit that lead male Anthony is a guy that we usually associate with his award winning feature roles rather than his sexual prowess but he rose to the challenge here as did all those involved in making the movie so Man Vs. Pussy got our top rating and a top spot on our best porn parody/comedy list."
And Ottimo Massimo at Fleshbot ended his review with, "This is one of the funniest things ever produced by the adult industry, it has some of my favorite people in it, and it deserves a place of honor on the shelf of every porn consumer in America."
Popporn's Man vs. Pussy is nominated for two AVN Awards including Best Gonzo Release and Best Non-Sex Performance.
