See, we told you the Dodgers would be alright. Last night Jeff Weaver mowed down the Giants, pitching eight shutout innings in a 6-0 victory. It was the team's second straight victory over the hated Giants, and the Azul have hit every pitcher they've face so far except Jason Schmidt. So now is there any question that the Dodgers got the better of the Kevin Brown deal? Weaver has been one of the most reliable starters for the Dodgers, and Yhencey Brazoban (also aquired in the Yankees trade) has become a top reliever. On the other coast, Brown has been on and off the DL, he collapsed in the playoffs last year, and let's not forget that he took himself out for a month by punching a wall.
While Bill Plaschke dissed Dan Evans everyday he was GM (and now he ironically longs for his return), it's hard to look at Evans' trade record and find a single deal where he was fleeced. Evans has as good of a trade record as any current GM in baseball outside of Billy Beane.
But maybe Paul DePodesta can catch up. His recent Jason Phillips for Kaz Ishii is looking damn good right now. While Phillips had an RBI hit and scored a run last night, is handling the staff well, and appears to be a solid bat in the lineup, Ishii is looking like Ishii.
"Cardiac" Kaz Ishii allowed five earned runs on all of 2 hits for the Mets yesterday in a 6-1 loss to Cincinnati. Of course, he walked four, hit a batter, while teasing Met fans with 7 strikeouts. That sounds like the Ishii we remember.
