Downtown residents, workers, and visitors are driving strong ridership numbers for one of LA's most successful transit services, the DASH Downtown bus system.

As reported in the LA Downtown News, the number of DASH boardings has grown at a brisk 35% rate over the last 5 years, topping the national transit ridership growth rate by 15%.

These numbers are good news, and may be indicative of changing attitudes towards transit amongst Downtowners, especially among those who are not transit-dependent. Residents of the numerous new housing developments in the center city seem willing to leave their cars in the garage, and let the LADOT do the driving.

And, at 25 cents a pop, the ride is a far better deal than the MTA's bus system, which certainly helps explain the service's steadily growing popularity.

Maybe the MTA should take a page from the LADOT's book, and lower their fares. Ridership would increase. Traffic would decrease. Our air would be cleaner.

But we won't hold our breath waiting for that to happen.
