At about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night, officers responded to reports of a stabbing at an apartment in the 1900 block of Wallace Avenue in Costa Mesa, NBC Los Angeles reports. There, they found that a woman and her two sons, ages 11 and 17, had been stabbed by an unknown intruder. The younger boy had been stabbed multiple times in the chest and was immediately transported to a hospital for surgery.

Neighbors told CBS Los Angeles that the attack occurred after the family returned home to find a man they'd never met before in their apartment. A neighbor, Shanes Edeleeuw, told CBS that she and other nearby residents heard screams coming from the apartment.

"We got worried after hearing one really loud scream. We walked over there and saw a lady laying on the floor," she said.

Witnesses say a neighbor chased the alleged attacker as he tried to flee until police detained him. One officer suffered minor injuries during the arrest. The alleged burglar's identity has not been released at this time.
