CicLAvia Is Coming To The Valley On Sunday
CicLAvia, the all day event that shuts down streets for bikers and walkers, is coming to the Valley on Sunday. It is the event's second time in the San Fernando Valley. This time around, the four-mile route runs through Pacoima, Artleta, North Hills East and Panorama City.
"We are a region of a lot of hearts," Lys Mendez, a volunteer and spokeswoman for CicLAvia, said to LAist. "The San Fernando Valley is one of the hearts of the city. It's important to take the opportunity to show a part of the city that they might not normally explore."
Organizers say they can't predict how many people will show but as many as 100,000 have turned out for past events throughout the county. This is the sixteenth CicLAvia.
Machete and From Dusk Till Dawn star Danny Trejo is kicking off the event at 8:30 a.m. in front of Pacoima City Hall with Mayor Eric Garcetti and Valley councilmembers Nury Martinez and Felipe Fuentes.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and there's no beginning or end, so you can pop in any spot along the route.
There will be plenty to check out along the route, such as street curling, live mural painting and a dance party. See the full list of activities here.
For people coming from outside the Valley, such as Burbank and Glendale, you can pop on a feeder ride, where you can bike with a group to the event.
Plan ahead if you decide to jump in a car. Van Nuys Blvd. will be closed from about 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. between Roscoe Blvd. and Lehigh Ave., according to the website. There's also bus detours, more info here.
CicLAvia, a nonprofit, started in October 2010 as a grassroots effort. There's been 15 events, spanning from the Westside to the valley to downtown and Pasadena—with more than a million participants, making it the biggest open streets event in the country, organizers say.
At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.
But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.
We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.
Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
