A Journeyman Finds a Home

As most people expected, the Lakers hired Joel Meyers to be their new television play-by-play announcer. LAist can't help but be happy for the guy. Few sports announcers have paid their dues like Joel Meyers. This guy seems to show up everywhere. Listening to the NFL playoffs on the radio? There's Joel Meyers. Watching the Padres-Cubs go to 12 innings at midnight on ESPN2? There's Joel Meyers. Wake up to watch Kansas-Iowa State Big 12 football on Fox Sports Net? There's Joel Meyers. Inadvertantly picked up an MLB Extra Innings Tigers-White Sox game from Comerica Park on Fox Sports Detroit? There's Joel Meyers. Come to bar, and find a Spurs-Hawks game on TV from some local San Antonio station? There's Joel Meyers. Find yourself watching dog frisbee, senior golf, or college swimming? There's Joel Meyers.
In all my years of being a sports fan, Joel Meyers has shown up in more random places for more b-level sporting events than anyone I've ever listened to. His nickname should be Mr. Ubiquitous. Meyers is the ultimate journeyman announcer.
It seems like he has done local games for teams in every city at one point or another. Yet, LAist has always wondered why he moves around so much, because Meyers is a high-quality broadcaster, whose years of exprience and travel resume have only honed his considerable skill. Meyers deserves to be with a class organization, like the Lakers, where he can make a home for himself. Since he loves Southern California, this is a perfect fit for him.

So is what's good for Meyers, good for the Lakers? Well, he's better than Paul Sunderland. Of course he's not in Chick Hearn's league, but no one is. Still there are better announcers out there than Meyers. The Lakers had their shot at Marv Albert, but for one reason or another, let him slip away to the Nets. They also decided not to make a bold decision, like hire a Bob Miller. We Still, Meyers is a good choice, even if it's the safe and easy choice. We'll enjoy watching Laker games with Joel and Stu.
