A young man on a bicycle who had just completed his first day of work at a new job was fatally struck and killed by a school bus in Palmdale Monday afternoon.

The victim, identified in media reports as 18-year-old Michael Valenzuela, was hit at about 3:45 p.m. at the intersection of Avenue R and 55th Street East, according to the California Highway Patrol, reports City News Service.

Valenzuela was headed south on 55th Street East when he proceeded into the path of the bus, which was heading west on Avenue R going about 50 miles per hour. The driver of the bus, a 54-year-old woman, swerved to avoid Valenzuela, but the CHP says the right front end of the bus hit the bicycle in the left turn lane of eastbound Avenue R.

Investigators said the school bus did not have a stop sign, notes CBS2.
