The Latest on the Chatsworth Train Crash

The 26th person died today at County-USC Medical Center. He hasn't been named, but was in his 50s. However, the Metrolink engineer who died in the crash was officially named even though his name was released on Saturday by local teens who said they were friends with Robert Sanchez and were texting with him minutes before the crash. A partial list of the victims was released over the weekend.
In a press release, the California Public Utilities Commission president Michael R. Peevey stated that he's asking the group's commisioners to "approve an emergency order prohibiting the personal use of cellular communication devices while operating a freight or passenger train anywhere in California." He is also asking the Federal Railroad Administration to force the use of technology that would have stopped the crash throughout California. A claim against Metrolink has already been filed for not using the positive train control system.

Also related to lawsuits, Bloomberg reports that the incident "may test a 1997 U.S. law capping passengers' damage claims in railroad accidents at $200 million."
The Ventura line was expected to maybe resume service later today, but continued testing on the tracks by the NTSB delayed that hope. A bus bridge will connect travelers between the Chatsworth and Moorpark stations (information from Metrolink's Emergency page posted below the jump).
The investigation into whether the signal was broken or missed continues with NTSB investigators who did not endorse Metrolink's quick claim that it was the engineer's fault. Metrolink Spokeswoman resigned Sunday night over the backlash that came after her comment and later spoke to the LA Times to defend herself.

Ventura County Line Service Update
NO TRAINS OR BUSES WILL OPERATE TO OR FROM CAMARILLO, OXNARD OR MONTALVO STATIONS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
Monday, September 15 outbound evening trains 111, 113, 115, 117 and 119: Metrolink will operate train service between Los Angeles Union Station and Chatsworth Station. Buses will connect to Simi Valley and Moorpark Stations from Chatsworth.
Tuesday, September 16 inbound morning trains 100, 102, 104, 106, 108 and 110: buses will depart Moorpark and Simi Valley Stations at the regularly scheduled times. Metrolink will operate regularly scheduled train service between Chatsworth and Los Angeles Union Station. Metrolink/Amtrak Train 158/768 is cancelled.
Tuesday, September 16 midday trains 105, 107 and 109: Metrolink will operate between Los Angeles Union Station and Van Nuys Station. Buses will connect to the Northridge, Chatsworth, Simi Valley and Moorpark Stations.
Tuesday, September 16 evening train service will operate as stated above for September 15 evening service unless otherwise notified.

No Pacific Surfliner or Amtrak service is available north of Los Angeles until further notice.
