  • In the Angeles National Forest | Photo by Jennifer Gaillard via LAist Featured Photos on Flickr How long does it take a criminal to notice something in your car, break in and get away? It's only a matter of seconds. Watch this video of it happening in Venice. Have you visited the new Jew-food fusion taco truck, Takosher? They have brisket tacos, a latketaco and much more fun. A man who "apparently won several...
  • Photo: Lucyrk in LA Angelenos, think about this the next time you're on a date. A recent study published in the journal "Social Psychological and Personality Science" finds that looks, obviously, are not everything. There's something else heightens the attraction and it's just not your shared taste in music: we are more attracted to people who have meaning in their life. As GOOD Magazine puts it, "the moral of the story, perhaps, is that...
  • Just in time for the Labor Day weekend, a union that represents Hyatt workers across the country is highlighting their labor contract problem with the hotel company. In July they held a major demonstration that shut town traffic on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood outside the Andaz Hotel, which led to over 60 arrests. Yesterday they went back, but reportedly stuck to the sidewalks. And today it's the Hyatt in Century City....
  • Los Angeles County's elected Sheriff today upped his fight against marijuana, calling most medical marijuana dispensaries criminal enterprises. "Millions of dollars are being made for profit, and it's all illegal," Lee Baca said, according to the Associated Press. Baca said there could be as little as 3% of dispensaries that are legitimate. The rest are likely criminal and could be obtaining the plant from Mexican cartels and selling it to customers with no medical need...
  • Conceptual regional connector map | Image via Metro As expected, Metro today released the draft environmental reports for the Regional Connector today and for downtown residents and commuters it carries some good news: staff recommend taking the route fully underground instead of at street level. As Metro explains, the nearly two-mile light rail segment will have a big impact on public transit in the region. "It connects four light rail corridors covering over 80...
  • Photo by Jack Rodriguez/FYF Fest Since there was so much enthusiasm surrounding last week's contest to win tickets to FYF Fest, we're doing it again! The one-day festival is this Saturday -- that's what we're giving away five pairs of General Admission tickets to -- but you should know that organizers just announced pre, post and after parties. On Friday night, the pre party will be held at the Grand Star in Chinatown where...
  • The latest Survey/USA poll conducted for a handful of California TV stations, including KABC-TV locally, continues to show that Republicans have the lead. That's a pretty consistent theme if you take a look at other recent polls. The poll, which surveyed 569 likely voters, also found that the legalizing marijuana initiative, Prop 19, would pass. The difference, however, between the past two Survey/USA polls and this one is that Prop 19 is losing support....
  • One of the Westside Subway Extensions under consideration. See them all here. | Image via Metro Just as Metro did for the regional connector, Metro today released the draft environmental report for the Westside Subway Extension, the proposed project that would extend the Purple Line down Wilshire Boulevard and possibly add a spur in West Hollywood. But just as soon as it was released, fuel was added to opposition's fire. "Westside subway extension won’t...
  • A new study that compared Calfornia-grown organic strawberries to conventional ones found that organic ones win. That is to say, organic ones "were more nutritious, had a longer shelf life, and left the soil in healthier condition compared to the conventional crop," says KPCC. The upside is the higher concentration of antioxidants and vitamin C, the downside is the smaller size and less potassium and phosphorus. Strawberries are a $1.6 billion industry in California,...
  • The 134 Freeway in the Glendale/Eagle Rock area | Photo by melissssaf via LAist Featured Photos on Flickr Demand for food from pantries is up. Here's by how much: 21% more than last year, 48% more than two years ago. A court has ruled that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown do not have to defend Prop 8, which banned gay marriage in California. Rumor has it that the billionaire Russian --...
