After several years of investigations and planning, the FBI announced today that 99 members of the Orange County street gang the Mexican Mafia were targeted and charged with a range of criminal activities, from racketeering to firearms distribution to murder. The operation was carried out by over 500 federal agents and officers, and those charged include some gang members who were still on the streets as well as some who were already imprisoned for other crimes.

After telling officials that the toddler in her care fell to his death down a flight of stairs, a Long Beach woman will be charged with the 2-year-old's murder, reports the Long Beach Press Telegram. Jennifer Marie Garcia, 27, was watching her then-boyfriend's son in 2006 when she allegedly fatally shook and beat him. He was placed on life support and died the following day.

The Garden Grove woman arrested yesterday for allegedly chopping off her husband's penis and then grinding it up in the garbage disposal is scheduled to appear in court today, reports USA Today. Authorities say that Catherine Kieu Becker, 48, put drugs in her husband's food, and when he awoke, she produced a 10-inch knife that she then used to remove his member.

For dogs, summer can be the worst time to be without a home, as it's the slowest season for adoption, reports the OC Register. To combat the problem, a local German Shepherd Rescue group is trying to adopt 63 dogs in 63 days -- between July 9 and Labor Day -- in an effort to make room for more who need temporary homes.

Film aficionados will soon have a new place to hang their porkpie hats with the opening of a screening theater in Studio City, reports North Hollywood-Toluca Lake Patch.
