Stories by Jessica P. Ogilvie

  • A 23-year-old man who was convicted of sexually assaulting a 58-year-old woman in a Santa Ana park faces 30 years to life in prison, reports CBS News. The victim was walking alone on a hiking trail at about 2 p.m. on May 25, 2009 when Alfredo Fraga grabbed her, dragged her into the bushes and sexually assaulted her.
  • When David Lavau, 67, went tumbling off a cliff in his car several weeks ago, it was widely reported that he saw the decomposing body of another person in a car next to him. Yesterday, that car was identified as belonging to 88-year-old Melvin Gelfand of the Palms area, who had been missing for nearly three weeks.
  • One homeowner looked out the window in the wee hours of the morning today to find a couple of friendly neighbors camped out on her lawn -- a pair of 200-pound mountain lions. The cuddly kitties, who were spotted at around 12:30 a.m. today on the 600 block of Camillo Street, stayed put for about 15 minutes before officers chased them back up into the hills, reports NBC Los Angeles.
  • In tonight's Extra, Extra, researchers make strides in MS research, Leslie Mann makes a most wonderful guest appearance, and Brooke Mueller files a lawsuit. Plus: Keep up with us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter: @LAist @LAistFood @LAistSports.
  • You may remember Tone Loc for his one-time hit, "Funky Cold Medina," or for his earlier chart-topper, "Wild Thing." Well, now he may also be remembered for being arrested and charged with domestic violence and possession of a deadly weapon.
  • The story is almost biblical -- son assumes role of father, daughter rebels against presumed right to parental legacy. In this case, though, the children are the offspring of a gangsta rap legend Eazy-E. The question at hand? Who will play the mogul in an upcoming biopic.
  • Those of us who have enjoyed being on the cutting edge of technology with our iPhone 4s can now get ready to hang our heads in shame: the iPhone 5 is rumored to be released today, reports KTLA. Tim Cook, who took over for Steve Jobs at Apple, is expected to announce the release of the new phone in a speech today.
  • Local inmates are doing Ghandi proud. The group of prisoners in an estimated 12 California facilities participating in a hunger strike has grown to nearly 12,000, reports L.A. Now, possibly the largest inmate hunger strike in recent U.S. history. The prisoners are protesting a number of regulations, most prominently those surrounding solitary confinement.
  • After it briefly looked like Kobe Bryant was going to be too expensive for Italy's Vitrus Bologna team to afford, the Lakers superstar may be getting close to inking a deal during the NBA lockout, reports CBS News. Virtus Bologna owner Claudio Sabatini originally offered Bryant $6.7 million for the season. Bryant came back asking for $15 million, to which Sabatini reportedly found "shocking."
  • Gird your loins (and your jewels), people of the Hollywood Hills: six homes on Mulholland Drive have been burglarized in the past three months, according to NBC Los Angeles. Thieves are reportedly breaking in through windows, in some cases, and immediately targeting the most expensive items in the house.
  • Is something just completely rotten in the city of Fullerton? As two cops face charges in the beating death of a schizophrenic homeless man, another was involved in a recently settled lawsuit against the city which claimed that he sexually assaulted several women while on duty. KTLA reports that Officer Albert Rincon was accused of arresting women and then groping them.
  • Apparently one teacher in Vacaville has never seen the movie "Singles," and therefore doesn't know that all women want is for a man to say "bless you" to them after they sneeze. Steve Cuckovich is in fact discouraging the practice of blessing someone after they sneeze among his students -- and thereby ruining the dating lives of God-knows-how-many young men -- with the stated goal of preserving class time.
