  • We should have known better than to question the rap-fu of the celebrities in the crowd at the Spin '05 Finals. We know that Big Poppa Piven rocks the black Frank White as his cell phone ringtone and fans in the know have informed us that the man known as Pedro is also a damn fine turntablist in his own right. And then there's Andy Milonakis. How we could've doubted his hip hop heritage...
  • note: we posted and pulled this article because the original material is from a satire site. We still haven't decided whether we're sadder that we couldn't tell it was a satire or that we wouldn't have been surprised if Pat Robertson had actually said it. In this case, though...he didn't. Not to be outdone by anti-choice fanatics or racial zealots, Pat Robertson (of the government approved Operation Blessing) thinks that Los Angeles-based evil talk...
  • LA Observed pointed us towards LA Cowboy yesterday who wrote about Good Morning America's playing of a supposed Al Qaeda threat against Melbourne, Australia and Los Angeles. The Cowboy wants to know why this isn't front page news for the Times. So does Mickey Kaus who notes that it is in Melbourne. Meanwhile, according to USA Today, Officials [are] put[ing] little stock in televised terror threat. LA Observed delves a little deeper this morning,...
  • The power is out. It has affected downtown, south Los Angeles, west Los Angeles and parts of the Valley. According to KCAL 9's news coverage, LA DWP says it is a mechanical failure at two of their receiving stations and the loss of power may be a result to some of the failsafes in place to protect those stations. Electricity is returning to some areas now. Traffic appears to be rough throughout the city...
  • Photo by Anna Martino. DMC would re-iterate that throughout the night as he hosted Guitar Center's Spin '05 Finals at the Wiltern this past Saturday. "The DJ is the foundation of hip hop. Without the DJ we wouldn't be here." The Fantastik 4 and Power 106's Mr. Choc tried to give him his own shine, "Without Run DMC, we wouldn't be here," he said but this godfather of rap wasn't having it. "It is...
  • Jen Sincero is a musician, sexpert, and the author of the bestselling book, The Straight Girl’s Guide To Sleeping With Chicks and the semi-autobiographical novel, Don’t Sleep With Your Drummer. She currently hosts a weekly sex talk radio show called Dr. Happypants on killradio.org. Living in Sin is her weekly advice column for LA's sexually curious, confused and constipated. Got a question for Jen? Ask her. We promise to be discreet (all questions will...
  • Not likely. At least not at tomorrow's NFL Kickoff Event. Based on his press conference yesterday, it looks like Kanye isn't even allowed to mention Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath in any context when he performs or promotes the concert. Who's to say what he'll do on his $2 Bill show or the weekend's relief benefit airing across the cable music channels. That doesn't mean it'll be a bad show though and the entire...
  • Anybody want to shed some light on this? KFI and Worldnet Daily are talking about a flyer that showed up last week in South LA suggesting that area gangs end their turf wars, join the Nation of Islam and start a Jihad against the LAPD apparently in response to the Tony Muhammad situation. The problem, though, is that the flyer references a currently defunct phone number for the 87th street mosque. The Nation isn't...
  • As Hurricane Katrina evacuees arrive in town, area schools will accept their students. The Dream Center needs goods while other local non-relief charities worry that Katrina will limit donations to their programs. Speaking of donations, martini republic points out you can help NOLA beverage workers while the Dodgers continue their amazing effort to assist those effected. Not all charity work has a happy ending, though. Some angelenos taking supplies south met with vandalism and...
  • Despite lots of our current campuses not meeting the federal standards (although 81% passed state requirements), LAUSD opened 13 new schools today. It is the largest opening of new school campuses at one time in any district ever in the nation, according to Superintendent Romer anyway. Not only are there new schools but we're doing away with year-round school and might get rid of junk food on all public campuses. No sodas and cheetos?!...
