Los Angeles Unified School District announced a new $4.2 million plan to hire more than 1,000 part-time, unarmed security aides in an effort to improve elementary school campus security after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. But critics are skeptical the plan will do much to actually make the district's campuses any safer.

A surfer discovered the body of a young woman floating just off the Scripps Pier in La Jolla yesterday. Authorities believe she had been in the water for some time before she was discovered. There weren't any signs of what caused her death initially.
