This Memorial Day a stretch of the L.A. River near downtown will be opened up to kayakers, fishermen and riverside ramblers for the first time since the river was paved decades ago. There is going to be a little ceremony around 10 am on Memorial Day marking the opening of a 2.5-mile section of the river that starts at Marsh Park, which is near Elysian Valley (just northeast of the 134 and 5 freeway interchange).

Law enforcement agencies in Southern California will be out in full force this weekend, looking for drivers who made the mistake of partying too hard before getting behind the wheel. The LAPD and some other local agencies have announced that they will be conducting DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols for the long weekend.

Police in Inglewood shot and killed a sword-wielding man after he broke the windows of eight police squad cars at the city's police headquarters. An officer confronted the suspect who had apparently smashed the windows of the squad cars and was using a long-bladed sword to vandalize them.

Northbound traffic on the 405 Freeway is going to be blocked at the 10 Freeway interchange two nights in a row while Metro does repaving and restriping work. The shutdowns Sunday and Monday will start at midnight and reopen at 5 am.
