After years of threats from the plastics industry, Santa Monica has finally passed a single-use plastic bag ban, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press. The council voted 4-0 to approve the ban which will go into effect this September. Plastic bags will no longer be available at any retailers in Santa Monica except for take-out restaurants and food delivery.

Three flu deaths in Los Angeles County and another in Orange County have health officials singing from the "get your flu shot" songbook once again, according to CBS Los Angeles. The Los Angeles City Council is considering a plan to cut many critical city services down to a "four days a week" program in an attempt to deal with the $40 million budget deficit, according to the Daily News. While many plans have been carefully weighed over the past few months to sort out L.A.'s budget crisis, this plan cuts the deepest and would have the most significant impact on the daily lives of Angelenos.

Though recent projections show that Santa Monica's budget deficit could top $30 million in the coming years, City Manager Rod Gould approved $1.4 million in bonuses for Santa Monica municipal employees, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press. Gould believes the big payout, noted to be "far less" than the bonus amounts employees grew "accustomed to" before the current recession hit, "struck the right balance between appropriately rewarding employees who are entitled to bonus consideration under their contracts and helping reign in City Hall's expenses."

Dr. Conrad Murray said "Your, honor, I am an innocent man..." and plead not guilty today to involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of Michael Jackson, according to LA Now. After entering his plea, Murray, whose medical license has been suspended, invoked his right to a speedy trial. Judge Michael Pastor commented on how rare it is for a defendant to push for a quick trial but honored the request and set jury selection for March 28.
