In the wake of several high profile shootings and school lockdowns, City Council President Eric Garcetti submitted a motion today to ban "open carry" handguns within the city limits, according to LA Now. Garcetti is calling the move "common sense" and urges council members to approve it. "No one needs a gun on their hip when walking down the street or going to the store," Garcetti said. "The open carry of a handgun can be intimidating and threaten public safety."

Kobe Bryant will be the first athlete (ever, ever, ever!) to have his hand and foot imprinted in cement outside Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, according to KTLA. Santa Ana police and Governor Jerry Brown's own security detail are taking the graffiti threats of killing Brown on Valentine's Day very seriously, according to LA Now. The first graffiti threat was discovered Thursday on a block wall on South Greenville Street near Alton Avenue. It includes a Nazi swastika and the phrase: "We gonna kill Gov. Brown 2/14/11" in black paint.

Judson Birza, winner of "Survivor: Nicaragua," was arrested yesterday. Birza was riding his skateboard in the middle of the street in Santa Monica when police detained him for a vehicle code violation. The police database showed he had a warrant out for his arrest and a prior DUI "incident." Patricia Dianne Krenwinkel, Charles Manson associate convicted of seven counts of first-degree murder, has been denied parole according to a statement released today by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Krenwinkel, 63, was convicted for her involvement in the killing of Sharon Tate-Polanski (pregnant at the time of her death), Thomas Jay Sebring, Abagail Ann Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steven Earl Parent, and Leno and Rosemary La Bianca in the now-infamous murders of 1969.
