There's so much to do this weekend...if you can wedge one more thing into your overcrowded calendar, please consider: REMEMBER, DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME STARTS ON SUNDAY, APRIL 3RD SO SPRING YOUR CLOCK AHEAD ONE HOUR ON SAT NIGHT. 1. The Los Angeles Book Arts Center's annual Edible Book Tea Party on Saturday, April 2, 2005. The March 17, 2005 issue of the Palisadian-Post reports that Swarthmore Street merchants are anxious about their landlords' proposed rent increases. Their landlords, Palisades Partners, a multi-family trust that owns 18 of the 22 retail and commercian properties on the 1000 block of Swarthmore, informed their tenants that rent would be doubled, if they renew their leases this spring. Most rents will jump from about $2.50 to about $4.50 a month, plus about 50...

Gawker.com, which doesn't seem to share Defamer.com's compunction to snicker at celebrity-offspring who are barely 18, shares a bit of news about a flack's efforts to spread the word about a couple of aspiring socialites, including Sam Greisman, who, apparently, is Sally Field's son. Upon reading about the publicist's efforts on Greisman's behalf, we felt an odd sense of recognition. Why, last week we'd just read a profile of Sam's (half?) brother Peter Craig, in...

Over on The Morning News, The Food Section.com's Josh Friedland hosted a round-table of French food bloggers to discuss veracity of the new book, "French Women Don't Get Fat," and, ironically, Los Angeles was mentioned more than once to illustrate bad habits in the entire US. One blogger, Requia Badr, said "We walk quite a lot compared maybe to some cities in the U.S. I remember the day I was walking on Third Street in...

April Fools Day is almost here. LAist, for one, can't wait. This year it seems like Angelenos are getting into the playful spirit of things and are ready to frolic, rain or no rain. 1. Equator Books seeks all fools to enjoy an opening reception for the "April Fools" exhibit, featuring the work of John Evans, Matthew Weidmann, Albert Reyes (aka Give), and Neil Wax's Abject Goods. 7-11 PM, Friday, April 1, 2005. EQUATOR...

This week on the "L Word" we learn that Angelenos really enjoy public nudity and sex. O really? Well, all the ladies get frisky in the episode called "Lagrimas de Oro:" Tina has hot pregnant lesbian sex with the new Euro-vixen in town, Helena Peabody (who looks and sounds like Nigella Lawson without all the lusty-busty-wench-wear), in the pool at the Chateau Marmont. We thought that doesn't happen anymore. Speaking of public trysts, it seems...

Defamer.com, et al, have discovered the latest blog sensation; faux-blogs written in the name of a celebrity. Today's specimen is the Michael Bay Blog. Now we don't know what's real or fake in blogland. To wit, we've happened upon David Duchovny's blog, promoting his directorial debut, "The House of D." How can we tell it's really written by David and not some intern sitting in the offices of Lion's Gate Entertainment's marketing office or,...

We're intrigued by this story in the 3/28/05 edition of the Los Angeles Times which reports that children found the remains [of a skeleton] Friday while searching for a ball on the roof of an abandoned building near Main and 89th streets. Officials said the children looked into a chimney and saw a human skull. The circumstances of the person's death are unknown. We need more information before attempting a joke referencing "Gremlins."...

Four homicides occurred on Sunday, reports the Los Angeles Times. "A surge of Easter weekend violence, including a double homicide Sunday night, left at least four Los Angeles County residents dead and two others critically injured, authorities said." This disturbing news comes on top of further efforts, some inspired by the death of Deliesh Allen-Roberts, to get the City of Los Angeles to do something about a surge of gang-related shootings. Some citizens have even...

Animators are a breed apart. Their refusal to accept limitations in space, time and conventional wisdom constantly amaze us. But we don't mind because the imaginations of these playful geniuses often first inform our dreams as children and reawaken our playful sides when we are adults. Charles Zembillas is the consummate animator, creative entrepreneur and visual developer: he's funny, fiesty and energetic. He not only works on his own projects but also runs an...
