This story is free to read because readers choose to support LAist. If you find value in independent local reporting, make a donation to power our newsroom today.

If you support independent anything, listen up: Village Books in Pacific Palisades is on the verge of closing. Thank you big box chains, for screwing with the independents again.

How to help right away: Shop at Village Books this weekend for the 15% off sale. You know you've got holiday shopping to do and why not do it at Village Books?

How to help after this weekend: If you are an author, have a signing there. If you are a publicist, get your author to have a signing there. If you read books of any kind, make a conscious effort to shop there. If you like meeting writers, attend a reading there. Then browse among the stacks, enjoy the mellow vibe, and purchase something else there.

If you don't, who will: With so many independent stores closing in Los Angeles, it's easy to see another plea like this and assume someone else will get out there and do the shopping for you. Guess what? They're thinking you'll do it.

So you'll do it, right? We'll see you there.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
