Man Arrested After Spitting at Latina, Telling Her to 'Go Back to Mexico'

A man has been arrested after he allegedly spit in the face of a Hispanic woman, then tried to run her down with his bike. The OC Register reports that 31-year-old Jonathan Michael Schmidt, who's white, rode his bike up beside his 36-year-old victim's car in Huntington Beach as they pulled up to a stop sign at 1:40 p.m. on Monday. He reportedly began yelling racial slurs at her and her sister, who was in the passenger seat. L.A. Now reports that he shouted profanities, and then "Mexican, go back to Mexico.”
Schmidt then allegedly spat at the driver through an open window. The whole thing was reportedly totally unprovoked.
After Schmidt rode away, the women continued driving and pulled into the parking lot of a shop. They got out of the car when Schmidt showed up again, and rode his bike directly at the two women, causing them to have to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.
Schmidt was arrested at the scene, and is being held on $50,000 bail. He's charged with two felony counts of hate crime battery and one felony count of hate crime, and is expected to be arraigned tomorrow.
