Los Angeles Asks Obama: Health, Traffic, Disabilities, Student Loans*
Preident Barack Obama spoke to a crowd of Angelenos for over an hour today at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex near downtown. After his prepared remarks, he took questions from us, the residents. Here's a sampling of what he said on a variety of topics during the question and answer period (the full Q & A transcript is further below).
"If we are going to reform our healthcare system, what we can't do is simply add more people to a hugely inefficient system that is costing us more and more each and every year," Obama explained. "Eventually it will bankrupt the country."
One of the most important ways control cost is prevention, he urged. That means proper nutrition programs in the schools, effective physical education programs for children and making sure everyone has access to a primary doctor and getting regular checkups. "That's going to be a huge component of whatever health care package I sign."
