Metrolink tests cars with more space for bicycles

Metrolink is introducing bicycle cars to its fleet of trains.
Metrolink’s railcars have two slots for bicycles – not a lot given that more people are beginning to bike to work and play. So the Southern California commuter rail service has taken two of its train cars and yanked out about 30 passenger seats on the bottom level. That makes space for at least 18 bikes.
The revamped bicycle cars are running only on weekends right now on the Inland Empire-Orange County Line. That line carries passengers to and from San Clemente Beach – not a bad place to ride a bike.
If the bicycle cars prove to be popular, Metrolink says it’s ready to add 10 more. Rail chief John Fenton says it’s another attempt to convince more people to ride the train.
