Mayor Villaraigosa, union workers celebrate AnsaldoBreda deal with MTA
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and labor union leaders Wednesday celebrated the promised arrival of an Italian light rail car manufacturer in downtown Los Angeles.
Frank Stoltze: On a Gold Line rail platform at Union Station, the mayor stood among dozens of union members.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa: And I'd like to officially welcome AnsaldoBreda to La Ciudad de Los Angeles. You're going to love it here. [applause]
Stoltze: Last week, AnsaldoBreda secured a $300 million deal with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to build 100 light rail cars for the agency. As part of the package, the company will build a new manufacturing plant and headquarters downtown that'll employ about 600 people.
It’ll take another thousand workers to construct the facility – that’s a big reason labor unions lobbied hard for Metro to sign the deal despite concerns about AnsaldoBreda’s performance on previous contracts. One economist says the project will create more than a thousand additional support jobs in the region.
