LA Police Commission seeks input on new chief
The Los Angeles Police Commission Wednesday convenes the first of a series of public meetings on who should succeed Bill Bratton as chief of police. KPCC’s Frank Stoltze reports.
The commission isn’t necessarily looking for names. Commissioner John Mack says it wants to know the qualities people most want in the next chief of a department that’s had some troubled relationships with the communities it polices.
The city charter dictates the selection of police chiefs. The personnel manager administers the recruitment process and recommends at least six names to the commission. The civilian panel narrows that list to three. The mayor selects the chief. The city council must confirm him, or her.
One candidate for the job is LAPD Assistant Chief Sharon Papa. If chosen, she’d become the first woman to head the department.
