LA LGBT Center breaks ground on multigenerational campus

The Los Angeles LGBT Center broke ground Saturday on a new campus for LGBT youth and seniors in Hollywood.
The Anita May Rosenstein Campus will be a unique facility that provides support services and much needed housing, including 100 affordable housing units for seniors, 100 beds for homeless youth and 35 units of permanent supportive housing for youth.
“Building this transformational campus is going to change and save thousands of LGBT youth and seniors over the years,” said Lorri Jean CEO for the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
The groundbreaking was attended by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Councilmember David Ryu, lead donor Annetta May Rosenstein, who gave $7.25 million to the project, and others.

The Center is building new campus to meet dual needs within the LGBT community. The LGBT community is growing older, following population trends nationwide, and about 40 percent of homeless youth nationwide are LGBT, according to a UCLA survey (PDF).
“We wanted a to have a campus where we would bring young people and seniors together,” Jean said. “Our experience with intergenerational programming showed us that there was so much that these two groups had to learn from each other and to help each other with.”
The Center has raised $35 million of the $118 million total estimated cost for the new facility.
It will take two years to complete and at 130,000 sq. ft., the facility will be the LGBT Center’s largest. The Center currently has seven facilities in Los Angeles and West Hollywood that have more demand than they can meet.
It’s scheduled to open in 2019 and will be directly across The Village at Ed Gould Plaza, another LGBT Center facility. It will become the new administrative headquarters for the Center, freeing up space at its McDonald/Wright health and medical center.
“It's very heartwarming and inspiring to see how our society has changed so that our entire community is coming together to support this effort,” Jean said.
