Compton Unified to discuss ‘parent trigger’ school

The Compton Unified School District board expects to vote Tuesday whether to allow a low-performing campus to become a charter school.
The battle over the school, McKinley Elementary, has been brewing for a while. It ranks in the bottom 10 percent of schools in all of California.
Under California’s new “parent trigger” law, if a majority of parents at a low-performing school sign a petition, that public school must be converted to a charter school.
A pro- “parent trigger” group helped collect signatures from more than 60 percent of the parents at McKinley.

They submitted the petitions in early December. The school district tried to force parents to verify their signatures by summoning them to the school last month.
But an LA Superior Court judge earlier this month ruled the district can’t do that.
The “parent trigger” petition is on the Compton Unified school board’s Tuesday night agenda, and supporters of transforming McKinley into a charter school plan to pack the board room.
The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.
