Whiskey Blu Could Be Your New Place For Cheap Booze In Hollywood Now That Power House Is Closed‏

Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

With heavy hearts, we recently reported that the iconic Hollywood dive The Power House was about to pour its last $3 PBR. And while that's still tragic, we received a tip on that particular story that led us to a $2 PBR just down the street.

Yes, there's a new Hollywood bar called Whiskey Blu that has this totally-not-a-mirage sign out front that promises: $2 PBR, Budweiser, Coors Light and $5 Makers Mark, Bulleit, Crown, Honey Jack, Jim Bean, Johnnie Walker Red and Dickel whiskey shots. This sign is present even on weekend nights.

Several of the Power House regular had migrated to Whiskey Blu the day I went, and I was told that they'd taken on two of the bartenders. It's no dive by appearance, but the jeans and T-shirt drinkers were just as comfortable as the couple in cocktail attire having a beer before a later gala event.

Tucked away off Las Palmas where Las Palmas Furniture Warehouse used to be, Whiskey Blu is a surprisingly large space. A main bar has plenty of seating, some of it oddly regal, like the egg-shaped chairs that flank the Burt Reynolds Playgirl centerfold. A curtain separates the bar from a venue where there's live music every weekend, and other events like live band karaoke and blues staggered throughout the week. Every Sunday, they host a BBQ with a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar.

There are patios in both the front and back of the space for smokers (and now vapers), and the back patio has a small bar and comfy circular booths.

As a caveat: Other types of drinks than those mentioned on the sign are priced on par with the neighborhood. However, for the working class Hollywood local who just wants a cheap, cold can of Pabst after work, this spot is ideal. Plus, as the bar evolves they're planning more events and food. Follow them on Facebook to keep up.

Whiskey Blu, 1714 N. Las Palmas. 21+, No Cover (except for special events). Mon-Fri, 6 p.m. - 2 a.m., Sat. and Sun., 2 p.m. - 2 a.m.

Editor's Note: We had originally reported that the event Hollywood Hoedown hosted by Danny McBride would be hosted at Whiskey Blu on Saturdays. It's been moved to Dragonfly.
