Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

The weekend is so close you can practically taste it. Here are the edible events going on in the next few days to keep you occupied -- and sated, for that matter.

Australian Truffle Dinner: Patina Restaurant is hosting a few dinners to mark the close of Australia's winter truffle season. Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10, chef Charles Olalia will cook five-course meals with the goods from Southwestern Australia's The Wine & Truffle Co. Dishes on the oh-so-decadent five-course menu include scallops with truffle crème fraîche, crostini, and parsley coulis; zucchini blossom tempura with lobster and truffle mousseline and baby courgettes; and mallard duck with truffle sauce, Rainier cherries, and coco nibs. Tickets are $100 per person, exclusive of tax and gratuity. You can find out more info on theirsite.

Brew at the Zoo: Tonight marks the 3rd Annual Brew at the LA Zoo, where from 6-10 p.m. there'll be an overload of California craft beer, delicious food, and cuddly animals. General admission starts at $45 and includes a five ounce souvenir tasting mug and 12 beer tasting tickets. There'll also be pub-style food for noshing on at an additional cost, karaoke, music by local bands and access to many of the Zoo’s animal exhibits including the new LAIR- Living Amphibians, Invertebrates & Reptiles. (Be careful how much beer you consume though. We don't want to be covering any accidents.) You can find out more info here.

L.A. Craft Beer Crawl:If you can't make it to the aforementioned event, there are two other options for buzzed on brew this weekend. The Beer Chicks will be hosting two beer crawls in Downtown L.A., one on Saturday and one on Sunday. They'll be roaming around the 213 Nightlife Bars sampling some of the best craft brews around, giving you the 411 on all the tastes. You can find out more info and purchase tickets ($49 GA) on the site here.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
