Spitz Downtown: Kebab Sandwiches & $4 Beer in Little Tokyo

If you're ever in the mood for great European street food, head to Little Tokyo. Yup, Spitz, "home of the Doner kebab" recently opened up its second location on 2nd Street amid kawaii boutiques and sushi restaurants. (It's original location is in Eagle Rock.)

We checked out the new restaurant recently and found that it's the perfect place to grab a quick meal or enjoy a yummy beer. The signature dish, the Classic Doner, made of half-lamb, half-beef Doner meat was a spicy and savory dinner. You can order it as a focaccia sandwich if you want a heavy meal with those thick pieces of focaccia or as a salad or even a lavash wrap like we did.

But admittedly, the highlight of our experience had to be the crispy pita chips. These are lightly fried and perfectly seasoned and served with hummus. We just couldn't stop snacking on them. If you want to just come here for beer and are looking for something to nosh on, we highly recommend you get those chips!

We ordered the sweet potato fries, too, which were light and crispy as well but oddly enough they didn't come with any sort of dip. We tried dipping it in the hummus but meh. How about a side of spicy sour cream or something?

For drinks, the bar offers a carefully handpicked selection of red and white wine as well as craft beer. We were pleased to find a couple of Craftsman beers on the menu: the Heavenly Hefeweisen and the Holiday Ale. That's how you know this place is serious about the quality of the brew they serve. They also have cans of Oskar Blue ales, a premium artisan beer (fer real), which go for $4 each or just $3 on Tuesday nights.

And the good news for working stiffs who need a drink in the middle of their day, beer here is available in a small glass called "cana," a serving size popular in Spain and a bit smaller than a half-pint. So you can enjoy your ale and still be functional at work later. OR you can even use the small sizes to sample the different beers if you don't want to commit to just one.

The arty, industrial feel of the restaurant interior blends in nicely with this section of downtown that's near the Arts District, and makes it a chill spot to hang out after work.
