Photos: Plan Check Brings Its Creative Comfort Food To Westlake

Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

Plan Check, which is best known for serving kicked-up American comfort food (think juicy burgers with ketchup leather and ooey-gooey fries) on Sawtelle and the Fairfax District, just launched their third location today in Westlake. And they have a few new menu items, including a delicious Korean BBQ Burger, that are only being served at this new spot.

The new location is right on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Bixel Street, nestled in between towering, ritzy skyscrapers. The sleek, 3,600-square foot space is a large open space with wall-to-wall windows opening up to the street, and plenty of outdoor seating. It fits the look of the area with its concrete floors, exposed wooden beams, wooden tables and steel accents. There's a long, wooden bar where they serve their craft cocktails, extensive list of whiskey and beer. We imagine this is a place where folks from the Financial District will meet for happy hour drinks after work.

LAist stopped by for a tasting at the soft opening on Friday, and tried out a few menu items. Although you can still get their well-known Plan Check Burger (which made LAist's top burgers list) here, it's some of their new dishes that drew our attention. The K-BBQ Burger, which is Executive Chef Ernesto Uchimura's tribute to Korean food is a take on the western burger, and it is topped with a Gouchujang BBQ sauce, grilled pork belly, fried onions, and their kimcheese (their gruyere cheese mixed with kimchi seasoning). It is a rich one for sure and not for the faint of heart, but we couldn't stop thinking about the complex and flavorful combinations long after we went home. We'll definitely be coming back for this one.

Their Meat & Potatoes dish is also a memorable dish, which has a hearty, beef short rib pot roast on a bed of cauliflower purée with a few tater tots scattered around the purée. The presentation is beautiful, with accents of purple coming from cabbage, red from the tomatoes, and green from the flaked wasabi.

In the same vein as their other locations, Plan Check is offering happy hour specials on food and drinks from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to closing on Mondays through Fridays. There are some familiar items like the Beast Fries (made with schmaltz onions, bacon spread and American cheese) and their Tacos Hamburguesa that we've seen at their other locations. There are some special new items in the mix, too, like their Baked Oysters Rockefeller.

Plan Check Downtown is located on 1111 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles. (213) 403-1616. Dishes range from $3 to $17, beer and cocktails from $6 to $15. Their hours are 11:00 a.m. - 12 a.m. Sundays - Wednesdays, 11:00 a.m. - 1 a.m. Thursdays, and 11:00 a.m. - 2 a.m. Fridays - Saturdays.
