Donate To Puerto Rico This Week By Dining Out In L.A.

Starting Saturday, over 90 restaurants in the Los Angeles area will be offering specials on their menus, the proceeds of which will go directly to hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico. The program—called L.A. Loves Puerto Rico—brings together hundreds of chefs and mixologists from all over L.A. to contribute to United for Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico-based initiative that collaborates with the private sector in order to funnel aid to the hurricane-ravaged island. The fundraiser lasts until October 14.

Among the participating restaurants include a.o.c., Michael's Santa Monica, Delilah, Huckleberry, and Mr. Holmes Bakehouse. The special dishes run the gamut from live scallops at Kato in Sawtelle to a "Lechoneria po boy" at Preux & Proper downtown. The efforts even extend to Palm Springs, where Birba and Chi Chi at Avalon Palm Springs are offering fundraising specials. All the dishes and drinks are inspired by Puerto Rican cuisine.

Andrea Sun of L.A. Loves PR described the effort in a statement to LAist as a way to "[m]ake it easy, geographically and economically, for everyday Americans - many of whom have been unsure of how to take action, or are donating to a cause for the first time - to contribute in some small way, regardless of busy schedule or wallet size." In describing the experience to L.A. Weekly, she explained it as "an outlet for all of us to channel our feelings of hopelessness and rage into action."
