Good Measure Is Atwater Village's New Wine-Centric Dinner Destination

Matthew Kaner, the wine director behind Bar Covell and Augustine, and one of Food & Wine's Sommeliers of the Year 2013, has opened Good Measure in Atwater Village.

"I've been wanting to open in Atwater for 10 years," Kaner told LAist on a recent visit to the space he took over from Ozu in January. He adds that, when he first moved to Los Angeles, the buzz around the neighborhood was a whisper, "then it became a yell."

But despite Kaner's previous ventures, Good Measure is not a wine bar, it's a dinner restaurant.

"The menu is wine country cuisine," Kaner continues of his first solo project. "It's not French or Californian or Italian, it can be anything. It's wine-friendly."

"There is nothing bold to interfere with the wine," Mike Garber, Good Measure's chef, who previously ran the kitchens at BLD and Mohawk Bend, told LAist. "But it will definitely be flavorful." The 75-seat restaurant will also eventually serve brunch on the weekend. Expect dishes like halibut with grilled rhubard and fennel confit, or peaches with speck and burrata.

And don't think Good Measure is going to skimp out on its wine list. "We have over 1000 bottles," Kaner said, noting that he will maintain the same palette of wines as his previous projects. "We represent 13 or 14 countries, already, and our by-the-bottle list will grow with time."

Good Measure's interiors were designed by Jessika Göransson, with lighting by Jaime Emmanuelli. A mural along the wall, painted by Catalonia artist Mark Antoni Freidhoff, depicts a bacchanalia into euphoria. And an alcove, previously designed to be an ice cream shop, has been converted into the Somm Bar, which seats five at a time and will be a space to focus on wines more specifically.

Good Measure is now open at 3224 Glendale Boulevard in Atwater Village. Hours are daily from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., with weekend brunch arriving soon.
