Family Targeted In Downey Shooting That Left 3 Dead

With our free press under threat and federal funding for public media gone, your support matters more than ever. Help keep the LAist newsroom strong, become a monthly member or increase your support today.

Three people were killed and two others were injured in this morning's shooting in Downey at a local business and a home.

It appears that a family was targeted in the shooting since all of the victims were members of the same family, police told City News Service. A man and a woman were killed at the business and another woman was killed at a home down the street.

Downey police Lt. Dean Milligan told CNS, "We do not believe that this was a random act of violence. We do believe that for some reason this family was targeted both at their place of business and their residence. We do not know why at this point in time. But that being the case, two specific locations this close to each other all involving family members, we do not believe this act was random. There is a direct correlation for some reason."

None of the surviving victims were able to target the shooter, police said. Neighbors of the business noted that the business seemed especially secure: the front door was locked at all times and visitors had to knock or be let in by a specialist, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The gunman reportedly went into the business, spoke with some people inside first before breaking fire and then going down the street to the residence where the second shooting took place.

The gunfire rang out at the United States Fire Protection around 11:10 am, and a short time later at a home down the street. Two other people were wounded during the shooting but were hospitalized and listed in stable condition.

Milligan said that a motive has not been established: "It appears that for some specific reason that there was an intent to harm this family or members of their family. We just don't know what that reason is."
