We featured The Day The Earth Stood Still when it ran back in May, but this week the Aero cements director Robert Wise's genius by replaying that sci-fi classic, alongside timeless musicals West Side Story & The Sound of Music. West Side Story and Star! (his post-Music reunion with Julie Andrews) are even presented in earth-standing 70mm! Another genre-defying artist receives his due every weekend this month at the Not-So-Silent Theatre. Jim Henson effortlessly melded puppets & live actors, reality & fantasy, commercialism & chaos. His work is that rare breed which can be called "magic" with a straight face. And it's hilarious for viewers of all ages. The Old Pasadena Film Festival also kicks off a three-weekend extravaganza of films on Friday with free screenings of Notting Hill and The King and I. Check their linked website for the full schedule.
And then there are fantasies that are decidedly adult-only. Italian genre films abound at the Egyptian, from horror films and gialli (Cinephile-to-English translation: a film movement chopping & screwing murder-thrillers with psychedelia) to pepla (Cinephile-to-English translation: mythological/historical action films nicknamed "sword and sandal films" for their abundance of Roman beefcake-cum-heroes). Fans of this latter genre in particular should also stay up for peplum descendent He-Man at Insomniac Cinema. This would be the weirdest program of the weekend, were it not for Ilsa, She Wolf of the S.S. at the New Beverly's Grindhouse Film Festival. The most highly regarded "Naziploitation" film (if such films could be highly regarded), it appears along with its star Dyanne Thorne, its sequel Ilsa, Harem Keeper of the Oil Shieks, and Stalag-less action flick Bare Knuckles in a tribute to late actor-turned-producer Don Edmonds.
Full list appears below. See you at the movies!

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
