TV Junkie: Monday

One year ago, Congress defunded public media. Now that we're 100% community funded, please become a sustaining member or increase your existing membership today.

The WGA and the producers are back at the negotiating table, hopefully they will catch the breaks that they need so that the collapse of Western civilization is averted. In a desperate attempt to avoid family time over the holiday, I managed to watch season one of Showtime's Dexter and my optimism for the future of mankind was restored. I missed Dexter when it premiered last year but was happy to cover the zany stunts Showtime pulled to promote Season Two. This is a great show - a self-contained reason to pay for Showtime. If you missed the first season, the DVDs are available now and it's totally worth your time/money. The "extras" are few but that doesn't matter because the show is what it's all about.

8:00pm How I Met Your Mother CBS - There are some LAist readers who are fans of this one. After the dreaded return to work today, I'm up for some laughs. TV Junkie 8:00pm Pick.

8:00pm Dancing With the Stars ABC - The remaining couples dance one last time before the final vote. I predict that we will soon get "Pole Dancing With the Stars".

9:00pm America at a Crossroads PBS/KCET - "Homegrown: Islam In Prison" Are we breeding radical Islamic terrorists in our own prisons?

9:00pm Heroes NBC - Peter tries to destroy the virus that he thinks will destroy humanity. TV Junkie 9:00pm Pick.

9:30pm Notes From the Underbelly ABC - Season Premiere. I _have_ kids and even I didn't like season one. I'll give them another chance.

9:30pm The Boy With the Green Hair TCM - A war orphan who wakes up one morning with green hair is subjected to ridicule, and this ain't no comedy (1948).

10:00pm America at a Crossroads PBS/KCET - "Campus Battleground" Watch our co-eds get all uppity about Israel and Palestine. Terrorists vs. Zionofacists. TV Junkie 10:00pm Pick.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our communities. We are free to follow facts wherever they lead and to hold power to account without fear or favor. Our only loyalty is to our readers and listeners and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen Southern California’s communities.
