That Inappropriate Jewish Girl

Everyone's favorite inappropriate Jewess next door, Sarah Silverman, now has her own TV show on Comedy Central, aptly titled The Sarah Silverman Program. This makes people like me, who have been fans since her one year featured player gig on SNL in the early nineties, extremely happy. Or giddy. Or joyous. Whatever. But even if you're new to the world of SS, it's still really funny, like I watched it completely sober but thought that I may have been on drugs kind of funny.

In the show Sarah plays a completely self-absorbed, jobless moocher who lives with her responsible sister, played by her real life sister, Laura Silverman. You might recognize Laura from HBO's series The Comeback where she played "Jane", Lisa Kudrow's reality series producer. In The Sarah Silverman Show, Sarah's complete obliviousness, coupled with her lack of self awareness is hysterical. In the first episode she gets high off cough syrup and goes joy-riding. Take note on the trippy musical numbers throughout, which gave me flashbacks to 2005's Jesus is Magic. I mean, its Sarah through and through so if you've never been a fan, it won't convert you...but like if you don't know if you're a fan, or you might be a little bit of a fan, just make sure you tune in. It airs Thursday nights at 10:30pm on Comedy Central.

Fun Fact: I had to interview Sarah for something a few months back, and when asked about what it was like to grow up in the only Jewish family in her New Hampshire town, she explained, "it just made me feel really hairy." Music to THIS Jewish girl from Connecticut's ears.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
