Magnificent beards and mustaches of all kinds were on display at the Beard and Mustache Competition at the Federal Bar in North Hollywood yesterday.

Extravagantly mustachioed and bearded men vied for the title in several categories, including "Natural Stache," "Style Stache," "Style Beard," and the anything-goes "Freestyle."

The ladies were not left out: Although few women can grow a proper beard, they are allowed to improvise for best "whiskerinas; the category rewards creativity and craftsmanship in coming up with a faux beard. (One female competitor fashioned a mustache made out of a bicycle tire. Cheeky!)

The event was put on by the Los Angeles Facial Hair Society, one of the many hair-centric occasions on their calendar. Next month, they'll be racing in the Stache Dash in Costa Mesa to benefit men's health.
