Pencil This In: Stanley Kubrick Costume Ball, 'The Shining! The Musical!' & 'Creature from the Black Lagoon'
Happy Halloween, Los Angelenos! If you're stumped about where to rock your costume this Halloween night, don't worry. Celebrations are happening at the Redwood Bar and LACMA. Plus, a spooky cabaret at El Cid, classic horror films at Disney Hall and the Aero Theatre, and the musical adaptation of "The Shining" we've all been waiting for are all entertaining tonight. Read on for the details.
PARTY
Downtown L.A.'s pirate-themed Redwood Bar will host a Halloween costume party tonight at 9:30 p.m. Headlining bands include Peg Leg Love and Ingenue. Admission is a $5 cover, but it's waived for guests in costume. Get more info at the Redwood Bar's website.
FILM
American Cinematheque screens 1954 horror classic "Creature from the Black Lagoon" in 3-D at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. The film's leading starlet, Julie Adams, will do a post-screening Q&A and sign copies of her book, "The Lucky Southern Star," before the film, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $13, $11 for students and seniors, or $9 for American Cinematheque members. HALLOWEEN
Captured Aural Phantasy Theater and Creepy LA present The Feast of Terror Spook Show at El Cid. The evening will feature a retro, horror-themed variety show, a concert by the Noble Gasses and Los Minions, and a full bar with food. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.; the show starts at 9 p.m. The event is 21+ with a $10 cover. To buy tickets, visit El Cid's website.
COSTUMES
LACMA will host their ninth annual Muse Costume Ball. The evening will be Stanley Kubrick-themed, to tie in with the museum's upcoming exhibit on the auteur. The tickets are pricey, but guests will be treated to a gallery preview and a concert featuring the Astra Dance Company. There will also be a costume contest judged by Oscar-winning designers. The event starts at 8 p.m. Tickets, which include parking and two drink tickets, are $100 or $75 for LACMA Muse members. Tickets and more information available at the event website.
MUSIC
The LA Phil will screen the 1927 silent horror film "The Cat and the Canary," a film about an asylum escapee who terrorizes a family spending the night in a haunted mansion. The film will be accompanied by Clark Wilson on Disney Hall's own gorgeous pipe organ. Tickets start at $37 and the film starts at 8 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit the Phil's website.
COMEDY
The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre will perform "The Shining! The Musical!" along with "Lula and Lola are in Big Time Trouble" tonight at 8 p.m. We're particularly excited for "The Shining!", which features songs like "Heeeeeere's Johnny" and "All Work and No Play."
