LAst Night's Action: Angels Fight for Best Record

Tampa Bay Rays defeat LA Angels 6-4. It seemed conceivable at the beginning of the season that the Angels would be fighting for the best record in baseball with a team from the AL East in August. The inconceivable part of this is the team they are fighting with is the Tampa Bay Rays. The Angels went into St. Petersburg trying to withstand the Rays who had swept the series back in May at Tropicana Field and have won four of six in total from the Angels. Angel's starter Jon Garland giving up five runs in three innings is not the way to win in this sort of situation. Although the Angels had plenty of chances down the stretch to take the lead, the Rays' bullpen made the perfect pitches when needed. Now both teams will wait and see what happens with Tropical Storm Fay (not Fay Vincent) to see if they can play the next couple of games.

Notable Notes

  • With reports of Greg Maddux coming back to town, all Dodger players beware. Don't get into the shower with Maddux around. Padre's pitcher Jake Peavy told Dan Patrick earlier this year of Maddux's penchant of urinating on people in the shower. While much has been made of Maddux's genius it must be noted, as Tim Keown wrote in the Four-Letter Magazine earlier this season, Maddux "throws right, bats right, farts left."
  • Sticking with the Dodgers, file this under "Player Who Should Keep His Trap Shut." Jeff Kent, resident chap-ass and unhappy soul, decided to go after Vin Scully. After hearing of Scully's broadcast remarks about Kent's hot streak while hitting in front of Manny, Kent told TJ Simers, "Vin Scully talks too much." Now while this may be Jeff Can't's attempt at humor, he needs to realize one thing: the people in LA treasure Vin Scully. While most of us accept the fact that Scully has fallen off in the past, Scully is still the best announcer in the game bar none. But then again Kent has made a habit of letting his quirky humor be known. Just ask the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets and San Francisco Giants about that.
