Schmoop! Photo courtesy whoshotya via LAist Flickr pool.
Well, a new week is upon us - and with it, a whole new opportunity to get out and laugh. iO West is in the middle of a series of improv competition as they gear up for the LA Improv Comedy Festival. Meanwhile, there's a bunch of great stand indie stand up all over town, and both UCB and the Comedy Central Stage are supporting live sketch. Get out, enjoy, and report back.
If you think we should list and upcoming show, email me and I'll see what I can do.
MONDAY 5/23
Oh, Brother!, 8p Comedy Central Stage. The great UCB Maude team is stepping out to the free CC Stage for a night of greatest sketch hits.
Melgard Mondays, 9p Melgard Public House. It’s the 1 year anniversary show of Melgard Mondays, which means a whole host of great folks: Brent Weinbach, Eddie Pepitone, Brody Stevens and more.
TUESDAY5/24
Performance Anxiety, 8p The Pleasure Chest. It’s not just a sex toy shop, guys. It’s also a comedy venue! And this week is an amazing line up, from Natasha Leggero, Matt Braunger and Nick Kroll to hosts Eli Olsberg and TJ Miller.
May Day Mashup, 8p Comedy Central Stage. Stand up collides with sketch as Brent Weinbach, Raj Desai, Eric Andre and more take to the stage, alongside UCB’s own Hip Hop Penguin.
WEDNESDAY 5/25
iO West Harold Competitions, 8p iO West. There are 4 teams left, and it’s getting fierce. Cast your vote for Bandit or Tatanka, with the winner in the finals on 5/30.
Meltdown Show, 8:30p Meltdown Comics. These guys just never miss a beat, with killer line ups every week. This time, it’s Sean Conroy, Rob Delaney, Maria Bamford and more.
THURSDAY 5/26
Baron Vaughn, 8p UCB. Vaughn is taping a new show at UCB, so get out and make it onto the album!
Doug Stanhope, 8:30p The Comedy Store. Stanhope is taking over the Main Room for a couple of nights at the Store.
FRIDAY 5/27
Looking for Good D*ck, 7p UCB. Jackie Clarke and Judy Greer are two of the funniest women you’ll find, so putting them together for a sketch comedy show is a match made in heaven.
Late Night with Howie Kremer, 10p Second City. This great late night talk show has a slew of great writers and a bunch of fun ideas. Not to mention the interviews!
SATURDAY 5/28
Pete Holmes, 9:30p Hollywood Improv. Holmes is so g*ddamn funny, you should be ashamed of yourself if you’re not at this show. Ashamed!
U.S. of Improv, 11:30p iO West. It’s another competition show at iO West, as improvisers form teams based on their home state, and battle other states until only one remains. The winner tonight goes on to the finals.
SUNDAY 5/29
Alex Raymundo, 9p Ice House. Raymundo, one of the Latin Kings of Comedy, is in the ‘Dena all weekend.
Sunday Services, 9:30p Hollywood Improv. A night of headliners that you may or may not have heard of, including Owen Benjamin.
As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
