A Double Dose of The Crafty: Home Ec. and Reform School in Silver Lake
She's craftyyyy . . . .and she's just my type!
Perhaps this Beastie Boys lyric describes someone on your gift list, or maybe even yourself this season? If so, LAist has a duo of destinations to recommend for inspiration, whether it's to purchase or to get inspired to make something yourself.
These are beautiful stores. Silver Lake's Home Ec. and Reform School, facing each other on opposite sides of Sunset Boulevard in Sunset Junction. Both present lovely facades, thoughtfully curated collections to purchase, and invitations for classes and clubs dedicated to promoting the creative arts.
Home Ec., on the North side of the Junction at 3805 Sunset Boulevard, is more sewing, crocheting and knitting-oriented, emphasizing the useful and home decorative arts. Inside are tables of sewing machines, notions, fabrics, and patterns from various eras for sale. Home Ec has been open at its new location for a few months now. It continues to offer classes in sewing, bookbinding and other intriguing disciplines.
Reform School, catty-corner from Home Ec. on the South side of the Junction (3902 Sunset Boulevard) has more of an accent on letterpress cards, calendars, invitations, printing, clothes and artwork. The ambiance harkens back to your school days. If you like paper and heartfelt, hand-drawn schematic artwork, the work here will resonate with you. Reform School's chalkboard out front has an open call for camera, book and pen pal clubs. Go inside for yourself to join a club or just enjoy the shop and gallery.
