Despite the lack of Gimps, samurai slices and Nazi scalps, Jackie Brown remains my favorite Quentin Tarantino film. I'm pleased as rum punch to share that it's playing in a free, outdoor screening Friday at sundown as part of the Alamo Drafthouse's Rolling Roadshow series, presented in association with the Cinefamily. The series goes beyond the drive-in, bringing audiences to the very locations where films were shot (in this case, it's the Del Amo Mall in Torrance). If that weren't enough, QT & Co. will be on-deck, hopefully accompanied by chicks with guns. But this isn't your only chance to catch the stars under the stars this weekend! The Echo Park Film Center's Filmmobile brings writer/director Allison Anders and her girl gang drama Mi Vida Loca back to the streets of LA (follow EPFC on Twitter @EPFCfilmmobile for exact location), and the Outdoor Cinema Food Fest hauls The Hangover into Exposition Park.
As usual, the Cinefamily has their hands in multiple cookie jars. They also play host to the Academy for the final frontier of its Out of This World: The Science of Space Movies program. A double dose of docs Project Apollo (an experimental piece preceding the moon landing) and For All Mankind (the Oscar-nominated celebration of the Apollo program 20 years out) close out a series which also features Fritz Lang's Woman in the Moon at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater, and a Thursday presentation featuring NASA personnel, astronauts, physicists, visual effects artists & clips from science fiction films past and present. If all that space-talk goes over your head, come down to earth and enjoy some exotica at the Egyptian's Saturday Luau Dinner. The all-evening event kicks off with a full dinner in the courtyard, accompanied by live dancers and music from King Kukulele and the Friki Tikis. Once the sun goes down, it progresses to an hour-long Tiki clip show and the LA premiere of The Mighty Uke, which chronicles the resurrection of the ukulele. Tickets are available for just the dinner, just the screening, or both, for the big kahuna. Tiny Tim would be proud.
