Photos: Inside Howard Hughes' Cozy Palm Springs Retreat
Ever wanted to live like an eccentric billionaire? For just $1.2 million you could have lived in one of Howard Hughes' mid-century Palm Springs homes—all without the discomfort of peeing into mason jars or wearing tissue boxes as shoes.
NBC Los Angeles reports there's now a sale pending for the 1957 home. The $1.2 million price tag almost sounds kind of modest when you consider its location, neighbors and former tenants. The Hughes house is just down the street from Bob Hope's "UFO" house—which recently sold for $13 million—and Lautner's Elrod House.
Aside from Hughes, screen icon Eva Gabor and TV comedy writer Paul Keyes both once owned the house, and it has also served as a vacation spot for Smokey Robinson and famed Hollywood producer Robert Evans, according to Curbed.
Hughes himself probably did not spend much time here, instead using it as a getaway. He spent most of his time cooped up in a Beverly Hills Hotel bungalow after the government rejected his "Spruce Goose" plane in 1947, watching movies all day. On Thanksgiving Day of 1966, he moved into Las Vegas' Desert Inn, buying the hotel and effectively making the it center of his empire.
It's not one of the larger compounds you can get in Palm Springs, at only 2,400 square feet, but it does offer magnificent views and a pool. One of the bathrooms even has a magnificent view! Now that's luxury.
